Kogelo, a rural village about six hours from Nairobi with an estimated population of 1,000 to 5,000, got its first wave of Obama-related publicity with the 1995 publication of Mr. Obama's memoir "Dreams from My Father."
Kogelo is surrounded by unspoiled and breathtakingly beautiful terrain with mountains, forests and lakes and abundant opportunities for seafaring, mountain-trekking, bird-watching and fishing.
